Some people are fortunate enough to live in a place where they can watch the sun rise and fall, every day from their homes. But most of us must seek and find a place to watch this magic happen. People actually climb mountains and spend the night at the summit, just to capture the beauty of a sunrise. I was lucky enough to be able to do this on Mt. Bromo on Java, and Mt. Merapi on Sumatra. Both took hours of climbing all night just to reach the summit by 5 am in the morning to watch the sunrise. And it was worth it! That will always be a special memory for me of the magic that takes places every single morning and evening.
The famous lyrics from the song “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof, remind us of how each and every sunrise and sunset means yet another day has passed.
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze.
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears.
